Secular Education and Hasidic Communities
Hosted By: Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan
According to a December 2019 New York City Department of Education report, thousands of Jewish children attending Ultra-Orthodox and Chassidic yeshivas are not receiving a secular education equivalent to that delivered in public schools.
Please join JCC Social Justice Activist in Residence Ruth Messinger for a discussion on this important topic and current efforts to bring about the changes necessary to ensure a basic education for all children in New York City. She will be joined by Naftuli Moster, founder and executive director of Yaffed: Young Advocates for Fair Education; Beatrice Weber, whose son attends a Chassidic yeshiva; and Jamie Hooper, a private school teacher and parent. Cosponsored by the JCC’s Center for Jewish Living, Avodah, B’nai Jeshurun, Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, Footsteps, JTS Hendel Center for Ethics and Justice, National Council of Jewish Women New York, Repair the World Brooklyn, Repair the World Harlem, Romemu, and Central Synagogue.
