The Legacy of the Battle of Shiloh

In April 1862, Confederate forces surprised Union forces at Pittsburg Landing, a small steamboat landing on the Tennessee River. The two armies faced off for control of the all-important Mississippi Valley—knowing that victory could determine the outcome of the Civil War. The violent clash, which came to be known as the Battle of Shiloh, ended with 23,746 dead or wounded. The unprecedented human toll forced the citizens of a divided nation to reckon with the prospect of a war that was longer and bloodier than they had ever imagined.

In this illustrated Zoom talk, Ellen Snyder-Grenier, principal of REW & Co., will share the story of the Battle of Shiloh. The epic fight is the subject of an exhibition she is currently working on for the National Park Service’s Shiloh National Military Park.
